Elizabeth J. Downs of Ellenton, Florida, formerly of Belmont, MA passed peacefully on May 24, 2026. She was preceded in death by her late husband Thomas Downs, also of Ellenton and Belmont, as well as her first husband Francis Staniewicz of Belmont and Cambridge MA. She and “Frank” were the beloved parents of Susan Staniewicz McAlpine and her husband Peter of Kingman, Arizona, their son Joseph Staniewicz who left this earth in 1973 and his twin sister, Cathy Staniewicz of Morongo Valley, California
“Betty” was the last surviving sibling of a family that included the late Edmund Connolly of Massachusetts, William Connolly and Peggy Connolly, her beloved sister-in-law, of Virginia, who both left this earth in recent weeks, and the late John Connolly of New Hampshire. She leaves many nieces and nephews living in states across the country.
She was a long-time employee of the City of Cambridge, MA until her retirement in 1992. She spent many enjoyable years of retirement in Ellenton with Tom. Following his passing she was an enthusiastic volunteer at St. Francis Cabrini’s Thrift shop. She will be missed by her family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to St. Judes Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or St. Joseph Church’s Eucharistic Services or food bank, 2704 33rd St. Bradenton Fla. Services will be held privately.
