Gayle T. Fleury
(February 20, 1941 – April 17, 2023)
Gayle T. Fleury, 82, of Palmetto, FL, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2023, at Manatee Memorial Hospital, Bradenton, where she was in Hospice care.
Born February 20, 1941 in Malone, NY, she was the daughter of George F. and Beatrice Helen Ashlaw La Plante. She married Oscar L. Fleury on June 14, 1958 at Notre Dame Church with the Reverend Robert Lamitie officiating. The couple lived for many years in Warners, NY. She was a devoted mother to two children, Michael and Michelle, and a proud grandmother to three grandchildren and three great-granddaughters.
Gayle attended St. Joseph’s Academy and Franklin Academy High School in Malone. She became a licensed practical nurse in 1977 and spent her 21-year career caring for others at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Syracuse. She retired in 1998 and moved to Florida where she continued to work in healthcare for a few years. She was active for many years as a Eucharistic Minister for Our Lady of Good Counsel in Warners, and volunteered as a cook with the Warners Volunteer Fire Department. In Palmetto, she was a Eucharistic Minister for more than 20 years at Holy Cross Catholic Church. She was active in the Terra Ceia Manor Community. Thanks to her advocacy efforts, Terra Ceia Manor has a Bocce Ball court for its neighbors. Gayle loved to spend time with friends and family, often hosting gatherings at her homes in Warners and Palmetto. She was an excellent cook and baker, and enjoyed playing cards and making crafts. She loved all things purple, shopping with friends, and supporting causes she cared about.
Besides her parents, Gayle was predeceased by her son, Michael Fleury; her mother-in-law, Dorinth and Herman Fleury; and several brothers-in-law including Alan Fleury, Clayton Fleury and Thomas F. Hanley.
Gayle is survived by her beloved husband, Oscar; her daughter, Michelle (Joe) Longo, Syracuse; her daughter-in-law, Kristine Fleury, Syracuse; her grandchildren, Amber Farina, Houston, and Joshua and Alyssa Fleury, both of Syracuse; her great-granddaughters, Emma and Kennedy, both of Houston, and Aurora, Syracuse. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Anne Hanley, Palm Harbor, FL, and brother-in-law, Ronald Fleury, Franklin, TN. She is the beloved aunt to numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, Palmetto, FL with Rev. Leszek Trojanowski officiating. A Rosary will be led by the Legion of Mary with family and friends at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Holy Cross Garden of Peace immediately following the Mass. Arrangements have been made with support from Skyway Memorial Gardens.
