Lionel Robert Friedman's Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lionel Robert Friedman, a brilliant physicist, loving father, and cherished friend. Born in Philadelphia, PA in 1933, Lionel dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge and scientific discovery. He passed on August 15, 2023 in Bradenton, Florida, just three months after celebrating his 90th birthday.
After earning his PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, Lionel embarked on a remarkable journey that led him to the prestigious Cavendish Labs of Cambridge University. There, he had the privilege of working alongside the distinguished Nobel Prize-winning physicist, Sir Neville Mott. Lionel’s groundbreaking contributions to the field of quantum mechanics left an indelible mark on the scientific community, forever shaping our understanding of the universe at its most fundamental level.
Beyond his exceptional career, Lionel possessed a profound love for chamber music and tennis. Whether it was the harmonious notes of a string quartet or the exhilarating thrill of a tennis match, he found solace and joy in these passions that enriched his life.
Lionel will be remembered for his boundless curiosity, unwavering dedication, and the impact he made on the world of science. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and influence generations to come.
Lionel is survived by his loving wife Pearl, his son Mark and wife Andrea of Lancaster MA, his son Philip of Pelham NY, his son Stephen and his partner Jocelyn of Greenfield MA, and loving grandchildren Sarah, Gavin and Scott who will forever hold his memory close to their hearts.
