Mildred Mae Simmons was born to Mildred and William Henry Walters in Philadelphia in 1924. She came from a large family of seven children with grandmother and grandfather residing in a row house in Germantown. Mildred always said she had the perfect mom for a shy, retiring girl with an embarrassing speech impediment. Two events would change her life and destiny. First, as a young woman, a "chance" hearing of the Lutheran Hour on radio would transform her... from self-doubt and guilt to grace and freedom. Then during World War II at a USO dance she would meet a bold young marine. Together for 73 years, Millie and Warren would pursue that grace and freedom, sacrificing other pursuits and possessions, to share the recipe for forgiveness and happiness with others. Kind, thoughtful and gentle, she always would find a genuine encouraging word for others... seasoned with her ever-present smile. The shy, timid girl, turned passionate for God, found her voice and with intelligence, wit, insight and compassion became a sought after public speaker sharing her humble heart and a message of transforming grace. For forty years, the perfect counterpoint to her bold and passionate husband, she shared in their ministry as a gifted teacher, pastor's wife, missionary, and counselor. She is survived by her son Dan, daughter-in-law Rebecca, grandchildren Kirsten and Andrew, sister Barbara and brother Jack. She followed Warren to heaven after 47 days and her son Dana after 51 years.
