Phyllis Selmaine Bryers Bakran DeMay
PALMETTO FL – Phyllis DeMay, 82, died peacefully November 1, 2023, surrounded by loving family. She was born March 2, 1941, in McMillan, Michigan, the daughter of Floyd and Selmaine (McInnis) Bryers.
Phyllis started her working career as a teenager working as a waitress, first at Tylene’s Resort, and later at The House of Ludington and then Kallio’s Restaurant before becoming a homemaker in 1959 when she married Joseph Bakran.
In 1968, she married Joseph DeMay and resumed her working career, first as a receptionist at Doctor’s Park, and later as a Realtor with Century 21 Real Estate. She transitioned into mortgage banking and she and Joe moved to Florida in 1983 where she remained in mortgage banking until her retirement from SunTrust Bank in 2003.
Phyllis spent her retirement years engaged in oil painting and crafting. She loved her membership in the Red Hat Society and greatly enjoyed her monthly lunches over the past 20 years with The First Wives Club. She also loved the fall color and made annual trips to the Smoky Mountains every October with Joe.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by four brothers, Wayne, Maynard, Howard, and Marvin; and three sisters, Joyce, Donna, and Lois. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Joseph; sisters, Sharon, and Barb; children, Scott, Suzanne, Jeff, and Todd; and grandchildren Austin, Josh, Will, and Ben. She is additionally survived by her stepchildren, Cindy, Michael, Pamela, Patrick, and Joe Jr. and many step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.
A celebration of Phyllis’s life will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11 at Skyway Memorial Gardens 5200 Us Highway 19 Palmetto, FL 34221.
