Walter E. Pearcey's Obituary
Walter Eugene Pearcey, Jr. died Thursday, September 26, 2013. He was 85 years old. Walter was born in Rhine, Georgia and moved to Sarasota, Florida with his parents at an early age. After graduating high school he served in the US Army from 1945-1951, and was stationed in Germany and saw combat in Korea.Walter was a graduate of Bethune Cookman College and received his MA degree from the University of South Florida. He taught Social Studies at Lincoln Memorial High School for eight years. In 1965 he became the founding director of Manatee County's Head Start Program. Walter was recruited by the University of South Florida in 1970, where he was an instructor in the Early Childhood and Elementary Education Department and a Supervising Professor of Interns until he retired in 1988.He is survived by his wife, Earlieen Virginia Pearcey, his sons Walter III (Cheri) and Roderick Kenneth (Brenda), daughter Vickie, five grandchildren, (Valeria Frances, Roderick, Ryan, Walter Edward, Randall), three great-grandchildren (Deshaun, Nyan Laila), brothers, Cleveland (Ann) and Charles, sisters, Jean Mosley, Dr. Annette Pearcey and Rev. Dentise Copeland (James), and a host of nieces and nephews.The viewing and memorial services will be at Lincoln Memorial Middle School, Palmetto, Florida on Saturday, October 5, 2013. The viewing is from 10am-12noon and the services start at noon. Arrangements by Jones Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the PASISCEEA Scholarship Fund.
