Memories of Susie
When I think of Susie, I don’t first think of an event. I think of a feeling.
Back in the late 70s when we first met Barrie through Potentials Unlimited, Susie was always there in the background — steady, warm, and grounded. Barrie had the stage presence. Susie had the calm center.
But what I’ll always remember most are the personal moments.
Monika and I spent a week with Barrie and Susie when they were living in Amado, Arizona. Her fondest memory from that trip is Susie’s tea. Not ordinary tea — Susie’s tea. Made with fresh ginger and chili pods. We all drank it. We all sweated. And somehow we all felt healthier for it. That was Susie — nurturing, a little bold, and doing things her own way.
Another time, we all went up to Big Bear. We picnicked along the shore of Big Bear Lake with that beautiful mountain view stretching out in front of us. It wasn’t anything elaborate — just friends, food, conversation, and nature. But those simple days are the ones that stay with you.
Then there was the week Susie came out to California. We explored all around Los Angeles and even took the train down to Long Beach. It was one of those joyful stretches of time where you’re just enjoying being together — seeing things, laughing, sharing meals, making memories without knowing how meaningful they’ll become later.
Susie had a warmth that wasn’t loud, but it was steady. She created comfort. Whether it was through a cup of spicy tea or a picnic by the water, she had a way of making moments feel cared for.
We are grateful for those memories. They’re simple, but they’re ours. And they will always bring a smile.
With love,
John & Monika
